Roger the Shanghai Master

On the latest tennis news. Roger Federer just won his first Shanghai Rolex Masters against Gilles Simon by the scores 7-6(6), 7-6(2). Federer's form was incredible that entire competition dethroning the defending champion Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4 in the semi-finals. Gilles Simon himself also played substantially well this tournament upsetting both Stan Wawrinka and Tomas Berdych. To all Federer fans out there such as myself, this win has placed him back in world number 2, replacing his great rival Rafael Nadal and this may be a sign of the king returning to his throne. If Roger continues to play in the upcoming Australian Open Grand Slam in this form, I think he has a great chance of taking it.

Mr Olympia

Hi everyone, today I want to discuss something not about racquet sports but rather about bodybuilding. More specifically this years Mr Olympia. For those who follow or pay attention to the scene you would know that this years Mr Olympia was full of controversy, discussion and speculation. Most of this uproar of attention was due to the friction between Phil Heath and Kai Greene, the winner and runner up. Here is a video of the prejudging where things between Phil and Kai got a bit heated.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWaXBzSbRgY
There are many speculation as to who was to blame for this conflict, now I'm going to be a bit biased here but during the prejudging posing it was clear Phil was not giving Kai enough room, they were all asked over and over again to shuffle over to give each other enough room. However Phil refused to move, intentionally or unintentionally could be further speculated but Kai was obviously frustrated because of this and was pushing onto Phil during the poses to get him to shuffle over. I'm not exactly defending Kai either, he wasn't smart with the way he dealt with the situation, that behavior on stage only makes him look like the bad guy and it did.
Finally I would like to talk about the results, (spoiler alert) 2014's Mr Olympia winner was Phil heath making this his 3rd consecutive win, and Kai obviously being the runner up. I know bodybuilding is basically a beauty pageant with muscly men so its all subjective and riddled with politics. However there is a certain criteria of which it is based upon so I think Kai Greene was better than Phil heath in many aspects. Probably the most noticeably thing that I could point out is Phil's stomach, it was out of control while Kai's stomach was in control, flat and abs were showing. Kai wasn't looking as dry and hard as he did in the previous Mr Olympias but he was definitely more conditioned then Phil is especially in the legs and back which are always Kai's strong points. I guess the point of this post is just for me to rant about the disappointment in the results, I felt Kai was robbed of the title of Mr Olympia. Here is a comparison photo, you guys be the judge.

Gilmore Wins Cascais Pro, Scores No. 1 Spot

The Final of the Cascais Woman's Pro was a powerhouse battle pitting the World Rankings leader Sally Fitzgibbons against the Title race frontrunner Stephanie Gilmore. Though Gilmore could no longer clinch the Championship in Portugal, a win at Cascais would see her overtake Fitzgibbons in the rankings and give her the yellow jersey for the final event in Maui.
Gilmore drew first blood, winning the opening exchange by a narrow margin. She won the second exchange with a midrange score for multiple forehand hacks, but Fitzgibbons fired back quickly, managing two closing maneuvers. Her efforts earned her a 7.17 and the first lead change with 20 minutes remaining.
But Gilmore answered in a big way. She raced down the line throwing powerful, vertical hacks to earn the first nine-point ride of the day -- the third of the event -- and force Fitzgibbons to hunt down a high score in the backend of the heat. Fitzgibbons found a wave and improved her two wave total, but it wasn't enough to overtake the heat leader. Gilmore won the event Title by a fraction of a point, and with it came the yellow jersey. It would be her first time at the front of the rankings pack all year.

Positions in Basketball

Center
This is generally your tallest players. They generally are positioned near the basket.
Offensive - The center's goal is to get open for a pass and to shoot. They are also responsible for blocking defenders, known as picking or screening, to open other players up for driving to the basket for a goal. Centers are expected to get some offensive rebounds and put-backs.
Defensive - On defense, the center's main responsibility is to keep opponents from shooting by blocking shots and passes in the key area. They also are expected to get a lot of rebounds because they're taller.

Forward.
Your next tallest players will most likely be your forwards. While a forward may be called upon to play under the hoop, they may also be required to operate in the wings and corner areas.
Offensive - Forwards are responsible to get free for a pass, take outside shots, drive for goals, and rebound.
Defensive - Responsibilities include preventing drives to the goal and rebounding.

Guard
These are potentially your shortest players and they should be really good at dribbling fast, seeing the court, and passing. It is their job to bring the ball down the court and set up offensive plays.
Offensive - Dribbling, passing, and setting up offensive plays are a guard's main responsibilities. They also need to be able to drive to the basket and to shoot from the perimeter.
Defensive - On defense, a guard is responsible for stealing passes, contesting shots, preventing drives to the hoop, and for boxing out.

For me Basketball has always been a competitive sport, playing since I was 11 years old. Even though I do not play as competitive as before it is still a great sport enjoyed by both young and old and males and females.

Introduction to Surfing

Hey, my name is Cass Wood. I am 20 years old from Sydney's Northern Beaches. I am currently studying at Macquarie University doing a bachelor of Commerce - Professional accounting. Apart from studying I am an extra on Home & Away, I am signed with Gear Models, and also do lots of promotional work.

My hobbies include surfing, guitar, horse riding, gymnastics, soccer, rugby and most sports in general. But one of my absolute favourite things to do is surf. And the rest of my posts will mostly talk about surfing.

I grew up in a house that was basically on Avalon beach. My whole family surfs and my dad is a part of Avalon Beach surf lifesaving club. Surfing and the ocean has become a big part of my lifestyle. I started surfing when I was really little, with my older sister pushing me on tiny waves on a big surfboard. Over the years I have slowly progressed, downsizing in boards and practising more and more each day. Surfing started off as more as a hobby for me, but now I am more serious about it, and train as much as I can. I take part in Longy Boardriders, which is a surf comp that is held at Long Reef Beach on the last sunday of each month. Its a friendly yet competitive comp, and I love being a part of it.

In my next post I will talk about the background of surfing, and who my role models are.

Introduction to Squash

Sorry for the delay guys, been very busy lately. So here is the promised introduction to squash.
Squash is a racquet sport played by 2 people in a 6.4m x 9.75m court surrounded by 4 walls. The idea of the sport is for the two players to alternatively hit the ball with their racquets onto the playable surfaces on the wall before the ball bounces twice on the floor. The equipment used in squash is different from those in other racquet sports.

The squash racquet are more narrow, slender, long and light compared to those of a tennis racquet.

external image racket_rev.gif

While the squash ball is a small rubber ball with a hollow center. There are different grading for the balls ranging from balls for beginners to those used in competitive levels.
external image squash-balls.png

In terms of how it is played every point starts with a serve from a player. The server must serve with at least one foot within the service box and hit the ball to the front wall above the service line while still keeping within the boundary lines. After a serve play commences.
After serve the 2 players aims to alternatively hit the ball within the boundary lines onto any wall they want as long as it touches the front wall before it touches the ground. The ball hitting the wall outside of the boundary lines is considered out and the point is awarded to the opponent of the person who strikes that ball. The ball is only allowed to strike the floor once before the other player hits the ball again and this process repeats. If the ball bounces twice however the opponents is award the point. After point is awarded the play ends, the winner of the point serves and the process repeats again. The first person to get to 11 points wins, with the winner must having at least a 2 point lead.  That's all for today. I'll have another post somewhere this week to make up for last week. Portmen from IsysSports

A little insight into netball, it is played by 2 groups of seven players which consist of a Goal Keeper (GK), Goal Defence (GD), Wing attack (WA), wing defence (WD), Centre (C), Goal attack (GA) and Goal Shooter (GS). Within the groups, half the team are attackers and the other half are defenders, with the main players being centre (C) on both teams. Centre is able to runs the whole court as he or she carries the ball up and down the court in order to get a goal.

Netball was a selective sport played by girls in primary school however going through high school and now at university, both females and males are now playing the sport. Netball is a competitive sport like other sports however in saying that, it is a fun and enjoyable sport. Netball is similar to basketball however it consists of standing still and not being able to bounce the ball across the court like basketball. Netball has boundaries where each player is able to cross only sections of the court. In netball, players wear bibs in order to identify the position they are playing.

Introduction to Netball

Hi everyone, my name is Ye Na and I will be exploring Netball. My love and interest for netball all began when I was in junior primary school. The reason why I love playing netball so much was due to my experiences with my friends and my favourite teacher being my coach. She was so motivating and supportive. They made the sport so much fun and enjoyable and in saying that, it made me love playing netball even more. I remember Netball as a competitive game because when I was playing it, girls would be really intimidating and in your face.I really enjoyed playing netball with school, going into high school, I was on the school team for grade sport since year 7 and also played in the zone team in my senior years. I hope in the near future, I'll be able to pick up the sport again and play with other girls and boys in the community.

In my next post, Ill be exploring netball.

Introduction to Basketball

Hi, welcome to my isys page.

I'm Brendan, one of the four bloggers on this blog. The topic I will be talking about is Basketball, a sport that i have a very strong passion for.
Basketball is not the only sport that i have played competitively, i use to play soccer as well. However, basketball is my most recent sport that i have taken to a competitive level. Unfortunately, i have given up playing competitively but still play with friends.

I began playing basketball when i was 11 years old, playing in a local competition at Fred Caterson stadium in Castle Hill. I was quick to fall in love with the sport where i decided to try out and was selected to play reps for Hills Hornets. Playing at a representative level for three years i decided to play soccer competitively. As the competition was in the same season i had to choose between soccer and basketball.

Moving from primary school to high school i played competitively for school in the ISA comp. This being in the summer season, i was still able to play soccer during the winter season. And continue playing competitively in both sports.

Welcome to ISYS Sports!

Hi, Welcome to our ISYS Sports blog!

I'm Portmen, one of the four bloggers for this blog. The others will introduce themselves individually in later posts, so look forward to that!
Our blog focuses mainly on sports and fitness ranging from personal sport interests, sport news to fitness tips and discussions. You are probably wondering what ISYS means in our blog name. Well this is actually a assignment for a unit we are doing in Uni so unfortunately this blog will eventually come to an end once this assignment is over. However during the course of this assignment we will keep this blog updated frequently, hopefully on a week to week basis with a couple of posts per week.

As for the topics that I would be covering, it would mostly consist of racquet sports such as tennis and squash, I would also from time to time cover general fitness and weight training depending on the amount of racquet sports content that I wish to cover on that particular week. I do have a sneak peek for the upcoming post that I would be doing.
external image yellow_squash.png

It would be an introduction to squash, the only sport that I ever played competitively and is something that I am personally very passionate about even though I rarely play anymore. Many people haven't played or even heard of this sport before and its truly a shame because it is a very intense and fun sport. Squash and tennis are like cousins, very similar yet completely different so I'll look forward to introducing it to all of you.
If racquet sports, general fitness or weight training isn't of your interest please check out the content posted by our other 3 bloggers Cass, Brendan and Ye Na as they would cover different topics that I will.

Thanks for checking out our blog. Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE!! & stay active!
